We Have This Treasure: Sermons And Addresses By Presbyterian Ministers Of Montreal, 1820-2000

Book Summary

The English-speaking community of the province of Quebec has been blessed with a considerable number of good preachers, and even some who might be styled 'great'. In the early days, they hailed from the British Isles; however, in due time, Canada began to produce learned and godly ministers who were worthy to stand beside the best in Europe or the United States. This collection of sermons and addresses is offered for its historical and spiritual value. It is of historical value for it makes more accessible material that provides a witness to what was once spoken within walls that in some cases have now disappeared or that still stand but are no longer places of worship. The ministers who delivered these sermons and addresses differed in many ways. However, they had a number of things in common. All were Presbyterians; all spent at least part of their ministry in Montreal; and all were essentially evangelical in their convictions. It is very much worth noting that, despite all the upheaval and confusion in the Church over the last 200 years, there have always been at least some voices in the pulpits of this city that have affirmed the historic Christian Faith, centered in the One who is the 'Truth unchanged, unchanging.' Also, these messages have spiritual value. Readers today can appreciate their spirituality and be edified by them, just as people of the 19th and 20th centuries profited from them. John Vaudry is pastor of the Cote des Neiges Presbyterian Church in Montreal and author of Built on the Rock: A History of the Cote des Neiges Presbyterian Church, Montreal (2008).
