Book Summary
Gabriel's Ark is a touching chapter book about a family's dedication to passing on their Jewish heritage to Gabriel, their disabled son. Gabriel's sister, the narrator, recounts some of the challenges of growing up with a brother with "special needs," but she notes the rewards, too, like the weekly family ritual of making hallah for Shabbat. As preparations for Gabriel's bar mitzvah begin, readers learn how each family member has his/her own role in nurturing Gabriel through this important ritual event. Throughout the story the rainbow and Noah's ark become powerful symbols for Gabriel's inclusion in the Jewish community.
