This book consists of 50 stories or poems tracing Jewish history from the Creation through Alexander the Great and beyond. In a number of instances, the inclusions are the first time that selections have appeared in book form. For example, Emma Lazarus's beautiful poem, "The Birth of Man," had only previously appeared in The Century Magazine of June 1884. Many of the tales are from the Talmud (and were included in The Hebrew Review), the Apocrypha, and other non - Old Testament sources.
